Monsoons and winters do bring relief from the heat, but no doubt they open doors to the very common ailment – cough and cold. These are very contagious but at the same time preventable with some very old home remedies.

In Ayurved, cold is known as Vata-kaphaja Pratishaya.
It states that Virudh-ahar (an incorrect combination of foods), Ama (toxins), and Asatmya (change in environment) lead to allergic reactions, and cold is one such example.

Further, Ayurved points out that ingredients from the kitchen shelf can help a lot to get relief from cough and cold. Take some precautions to stay away from this ailment and follow the home remedies below for prevention and cure –

  • A perfect drink to cure your cold with a mix of three ingredients. Take 4-5 leaves of tulsi (Indian basil) and about a 1-inch piece of ginger. Wash them and then crush them with a pestle. Place the crushed mixture in between your fingers or on a sieve and squeeze the juice out of it. Add a small spoon of honey and mix it well. Take 2 tsp two or three times every day.
  • Soothe & cure that sore throat
    Honey is considered to be very effective at relieving coughs in children. Drinking warm tea or water with honey mixed in it is an effective sore throat remedy as well. Take 1 tbsp honey with 1 glass of warm water 2-3 times a day, to soothe that irritation and cure sore throat.
  • Onion juice is a perfect remedy for cough
    Grate the onion and sieve its juice Mix with an equal part of honey in a steel or glass container (avoid plastics & aluminum) and consume immediately. Onion juice should not be kept for long after preparation.
    Take 2tsp of this mixture twice a day to get rid of the cough. Onion juice also helps in reducing the feverish feeling of cold / cough on your body.
  • A magic concoction to control severe cold & fever
    Onion, ginger, jaggery, and black pepper cure cold, cough, and fever.
    Slice one onion into juliennes takes one-inch ginger piece finely chopped, along with jaggery and 1 tsp freshly grounded black pepper. Boil these with 2 cups of water on low flame until it is reduced to half. Let it cool down until it’s lukewarm and has it at least two times during the day. A perfect home remedy to cure fever, cough, and cold.
